Perimenopause is the first stage, sometimes called Pre-menopause, when estrogen and progesterone levels begin to drop. Perimenopause can last anywhere between four and ten years. It often begins when a woman is in her 40s, but can start earlier, too.

During Perimenopause, you might experience a lot of the same symptoms you associate with Menopause. That's because Perimenopause is the leadup to Menopause - the point in time when you have not had a period for 12 consecutive months. Until you've gone 12 consecutive months without menstruating, you are in Perimenopause.

Signs of Permimenopause

Changes in Cycle

One of the first symptoms a woman may notice as she enters perimenopause is changes to her usual menstrual cycle. Bleeding may become lighter or more substantial, the duration of her period may last longer or become shorter and can come in varying intervals.

Increased Bleeding

Many women experience heavy bleeding during perimenopause due to lower levels of progesterone, which causes the uterine lining to become thicker before shedding. Other health conditions affecting the uterus, like fibroids, could also be responsible for an increase in flow, so a doctor should evaluate any abnormality you may experience.

Perimenopause Symptoms

Are you in Perimenopause? If you're over the age of 40 and experience any of these symptoms, there's a chance you may be in Perimenopause.

Perimenopause is a transitional phase that can last several years. All women experience this phase differently. Some may experience a few minor symptoms, while others experience a range of symptoms more severely. However, it’s usually during the last two years of Perimenopause – when the decline in estrogen speeds up – that most women begin to experience more severe Menopause symptoms.

Symptoms of Perimenopuase can include:

  • Irregular Periods
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Hot Flashes
  • Night Sweats
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Stress & Anxiety
  • Mood Changes
  • Brain Fog
  • Low Libido
